Flor de Azahar from the Bay to Andalusia

New FAVI "Flor de Azahar" Mixtape by DJ Santero

FLOR DE AZAHAR (#ORANGEBLOSSOM MIXTAPE x DJ SANTERO VOL 1) by FaviSF

After opening with a tight refix of the already classic "Abrazame" with Los Rakas, Raka Dun stays on board as a flamenco guitar and a cajon form the beat for a jam that seems like it may be called "me gustas tu". This song will be huge.

Favi features Andalusian roots again with a smooth version of Manzanita's huge Flamenco Gitano Rumba jam "Verde". The tune borrows lyrics from the poem Romance Sonámbulo by the great Federico Garcia Lorca. With a hip hop flow, smoother than butter melodies and nice lyrics, Favi takes this tune to another level.

Many Andalusian singers and other singers from around the globe have used Garcia Lorca's poems for lyrics. Camaron de La Isla alone has pulled heavily from the Lorca repertoire with great success.

Garcia Lorca was also a pianist. Paco de Lucia released an LP with guitar arrangements based on 12 Garcia Lorca compositions when he was just a teenager. I was lucky enough to track down this 1965 LP somewhere in Barcelona many years ago. It survived in my tiny crate of records that was recently downsized from thousands to hundreds.

Tune: Zorongo Gitano by Paco de Lucía & Ricardo Mondrego from 12 Canciones de Garcia Lorca Para Guitarra

Tune: Bodas De Sangre by Pata Negra from Los Gitanos Cantan a Federico Garcia Lorca

After some tight lyricism rooted in Andalucia, Favi takes it to the Bay.
"Take me to the Bay" reps the Bay Area hard. A reggae cover of the Chile Peppers tune Under the Bridge swapping the city in lyrics from LA to San Francisco. "I walk the hills cause she knows who I am". Definitely a future Bay Area anthem. No Joke.

DEDICATED TO ALL THAT LOVE DEFEND AND REPRESENT FOR THEIR CITY #LANDNLIFE VOCALS PRODUCED BY FREDDY STYLEZ @STYL0

Santero and Favi keep it conscience with a ride on Jr Gong's "It Was Written" tune and more reggae and soul fire. They even find room for a couple of fun cumbia party tracks, all the while keeping it positive.

And to keep the dance moving, here is a new Willa Demphra track

Hot like Sriracha - Oakland Afro Sounds

Joni Haastrup is responsible for this Afro Boogie jam that calls out to free the people around the world. Recorded in London 1978 on the wonderful Afrodesia label, Joni Haastrup's first solo album, Wake Up Your Mind takes AfroSoul to the next level. I hear great influences in this album from the likes of sounds of the times like RAMP, Gary Bartz and even P Funk. But there is an undeniable African rhythm that carries this soul train across borders. Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaata would be able to play the entire song "Greetings" without lifting a needle or juggling records, because after the one minute spacey intro, it's like a five minute non stop break. I wonder if they were hip to this record back then?

Earlier in the seventies Joni's group MonoMono {The group, not the NYC Korean BBQ chicken joint} was deep on an Afro Funk Spiritual trip.

Makes sense that Joni Haastrup has settled in the Bay Area. Hope we get to see him in action in the bay sometime. Learn more about this legendary Afro funk artist here.

Tummy Touch Records/ Soundway Records has recently re-issued 3 albums from Joni Haastrup and his group MonoMono.

You can always get down to funky afro sounds at the Afrolicious party in SF

For another serious African dance party check out DJ Elembe.
He is one of the house DJs at Baobab and can be found at parties across the Bay spinning everything funky from Africa plus bhangra and reggae, a true party soldier that knows how to get the people moving.
I was happy to find Elembe's soundsystem set up next to the African food tent while waiting in line for plantains and black eyed peas at the Life is Living fest in Oakland earlier this month where I also stumbled upon a live performance by Los Rakas.

Daily Bread "Elephants" | Oddisee Remix
Hassaan Mackey & Apollo Brown

From Mello Music Group-

Daily Bread (Hassaan Mackey & Apollo Brown) continues to release new music as they campaign for their self-titled album Daily Bread. Today they've reached out to label mate and producer Oddisee (whose album Rock Creek Park officially comes out everywhere Sept 6th on CD) remix the standout track Elephants.

The Oddisee remix of Elephants is being made available on a special edition bonus 45 record that FatBeats will release on 9/13 with the 2xLP vinyl edition of the new popular album Daily Bread.

The remix brings Oddisee's distinct drum patterns and Hassaan Mackey's gruff flow at it's best: "some down to earth shit the world aint ready for...verbs from the soul adding light to the mic."

Download Elephants (Oddisee Remix) here

Oddissee's new instrumental tracks are super fresh.

Here is one of my favorite older tracks by this beat crafting rhyme slayer.

Cook Em Up Style

Tune: Cook It?

I found this 7" record of a Jamaican version of Hit em Up Style in the back of some section at Amoeba Berkeley where it had no business hiding... like the gospel or New Orleans section. The record caught my eye because of the title "cook it". I don't remember who the artist is, sadly I sold this record at a Fabric8 record swap. If this jam was a hit we could call them a one hit wonder, but I doubt it topped any charts, so we will just call them a wonder... until I can ID the artist.

The lyrics are all about some gal who has trouble cooking a chicken dinner and burning rice!

The Carolina Chocolate Drops keep the same lyrics and feel of the OG tune on this version adding their signature old timey mountain jug band/ string band flair.
